Fontainhas, Cape Verde. Nature has always been a protagonist in the picture Cape Verdeans build of themselves as a nation. Living in a tiny archipelago off the west coast of Africa, surrounded by the ocean, and dwelling in hills and mountains battered by drought, they often describe themselves as a resigned people experiencing the limits of survival. This small village in Santo Antão Island reveals human resilience against the power of nature.
